The first step to become a commercial pilot is the Private Pilot License. The Private Pilot License course can be started at the age of 16. The pre-entry requirements include a sound understanding of English, Mathematics and Physics.
The Private Pilot License consists of two components the ground school and the flight school:
The Ground School consists of the following 9 subjects:
*Air Law
*Aircraft General Knowledge
*Flight Performance and Planning
*Human Performance
*Meteorology
*Navigation
*Operational Procedures
*Principles of Flight
*VFR Communications
The ground school can be conducted on a Full time, Part time or a one on one basis.
Full Time Course
Course commences during February, July and October. Classes are held every weekday from 10:00 - 16:00.
Part Time Course
Course is available twice a year, in March and October. Classes are held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:00 - 21:30.
The exams are multiple-choice questions and the pass mark is set at 75%. Each sitting occurs twice per month for two consecutive days from 9:00 till 16:00. The student may sit for as many exams as he or she likes during those sittings. Each exam can be attempted for a maxium of 4 times. The exams have to be completed within an 18-month time frame.
All tuition, textbook material and navigation equipment are included. Mock examinations and subject revision are covered in the ground school. The radiotelephone practical is also included.
Flight Training
*A minimum of 45 hours Dual and Solo flight training
*35 hours Preflight briefings/debriefings
*Landing fees - base and non-base
*Fuel
*Insurance
*The flight training must be completed within the 24 months from the last theory exam
The 45 hours flight training that must be completed are split it in various exercises that have to be completed. These consists of the following:
*4 hours aircraft flight familiarization
*4 hours local maneuvers
*10 hours circuits practicing various take-offs and landings
At this stage you should be approaching your first Solo
*5 hours solo circuits
*5 hours advanced maneuvers
*2 hours local solo navigation (out of circuit area)
At this stage you are almost ready to commence overseas navigation
*8 hours dual overseas cross country
*3 hours solo overseas cross country
*1-hour basic instrument flight
*3 hours revision of all previous manoeuvers
At this stage the student will be ready to go for his/her Skill Test!
